Fondue was born in the 18th century when Swiss villagers, separated from large towns by the distance and freezing winters, shared in group meals. Their food consisted of such staples as cheese, bread, and wine, and they soon cultivated the art of heating cheeses over a fire, mixing in wine and other seasonings to transform plain cheese and bread into a savory meal. These meals often combined large families and fellow villagers who gathered around the fire, taking turns dipping bread into the pot of bubbling cheese. To this day, fondue has since often been enjoyed as a communal meal.
